The level and development of a country’s winemaking are determined not only by its history—of which Italy can be justly proud—but also by how well these traditions have been preserved and evolved to this day.

One of the most crucial elements of wine heritage is the diversity of local, autochthonous grape varieties. No international variety can convey the nuances of terroir—the combination of climate, soil, topography, and winemaking practices—as precisely as varieties that evolved in and perfectly adapted to a specific locality.

Italy boasts the richest varietal palette in the world, with up to five hundred officially registered autochthonous varieties. And, as you might have guessed, Pinot Grigio is not one of them.
